Friday 27th September

Meet at Auckland airport international terminal at 7am

Flight NZ99 departs at 10:05am

Arrive at Narita airport at 6:05pm (Japan time)

Shuttle bus to Narita U-City Hotel -Students and staff stay at the Hotel.

  • No liquids, make-up, drinks etc in cabin luggage
Saturday 28th September

8:00am Travel by Mini bus to Kamogawa Seaworld.

2:30pm Minibus back to Sammu City where we will be welcomed by the Education board and host families.

Introductions and activities

Students then leave with their homestay families.

  • welcome at City Hall: change of clothes for welcome, blue school shirt and shorts
Sunday 29th September

Students spend a full day with homestay families

This day usually involves sightseeing and shopping and will be different for everyone.

Homestay

Monday 30th September

Students will attend one of the three Junior High schools with their homestay. Staff to travel to visit the schools.

Naruto Junior High,

Sanbu Junior High,

Sanbuminami Junior High

Remain with homestay for the night

  • Blue school shirt and school shorts
Tuesday 1st October

Students spend the morning at the same school.

In the afternoon the whole group will come together again to tour the city and visit the Mayor’s office.

Wednesday 2nd October

7:30am The whole group meets at the Education Board

Mini bus to collect and travel to Tokyo Disneyland. Spend the day exploring and going on rides.

·   Large backpacks can be stored in lockers while at Disneyland.

8:00pm travel by shuttle bus to Keisei Hotel Miramare in Chiba City.
  • Blue school shirt
  • Suitcases stored- students take backpack with gear for 3 days: 2 changes of clothes, light jacket and jumper, comfortable walking shoes, toiletries, wallet
Thursday 3rd October

8:00am Depart the hotel

Morning sightseeing including Asakusa Sensoji Temple

Travel by Express Train to Kinugawa

Afternoon- Edo Wonderland:  Ninja and Samurai experience.

4:30pm Travel to Kinugawa Royal Hotel.

Friday 4th October

8:00am depart hotel

Travel by bus to Nikko Toshogu Shrine – UNESCO World Heritage Site

Catch the express train to Asakusa in afternoon: Tokyo Sky Tree

Stay at Narita U-City Hotel
  • Mufti
  • Reunited with suitcases in the evening
Saturday 5th October

Local Narita City sightseeing (possibly visiting a mall)

4:00pm Assemble at Narita U-City Hotel

Transfer to Narita Airport by free shuttle

4:45pm Flight check in  then 7:45pm Depart Narita airport- flight NZ90

  • Good day for memento shopping
Sunday 6th October

Arrive at Auckland Airport 10:15am

Parents to meet and collect students from the airport.

Sky Tree and Shibuya Crossing

We have spent a hectic day on trains and buses today.  We took the express train to Tokyo, went up the Sky Tree; which is almost twice the height of the Sky Tower.  Then we took on and defeated Tokyo rush hour traffic to experience Shabuya crossing. As I write this we are on the Narita express heading to our final hotel for our last night in Japan.  Excited students after successfully cross Shabuya The Narita express Tokyo subway. When we got on it was empty. When we got off…not so much.

Final day

Today was a more relaxed day. We started with a sleep-in and a late breakfast.  Once up and going we decided to walk to the mall, rather than taking the bus. This turned out to be a great idea as we walked through a street in Narita full of traditional shops and a stunning temple.  After visiting the mall is was buses and trains to pick up bags and head for the airport.  Once there we were farewelled by some friends Now we are trying to get some sleep on the plane, ready to meet our families.  See you soon.

Welcome

After a great day at Seaworld, we returned to Sammu City Town Hall for the official welcome.  As the bus arrived, the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Educational Board members and families awaited with flags flying.  Once we disembarked and unloaded the bus, we all went to the Town Hall for the official welcome.  Although warned, I don't think our children realised how many people would be there.  The Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Education Board superintendent, Deputy superintendent, and a Sammu City student representative presented speeches.  Rhys, who was probably the best speaker of the night, and I replied.  Our ākonga then did a beautiful waiata and enthusiastic haka; our hosts enjoyed both. Sammy City responded with a beautiful choral item. Ourbervousstudents then introduced themselves in Japanese.  Our students then met their host families, too, with lots of flag-waving and photos.
